Before you start: choose the right indicator
Exness provides access to MetaTrader 5, but indicator installation is mainly an MT5 function—not a broker-specific feature. The workflow is similar across brokers using the platform.
There is no single “best” indicator for every trader. Useful starting points include:
- Moving averages: show trend direction, but lag price and can produce conflicting signals in sideways markets.
- RSI: measures momentum; an overbought reading does not automatically mean sell.
- ATR: measures volatility, not direction, and can help inform stop-distance decisions.
These are built into MT5. Try them before paying for a custom tool. Assess whether an indicator repaints, how its signals behave after costs, and whether you understand its calculation.
How to add built-in indicators to Exness MT5
Open MT5 and log in using the trading account credentials and server shown in your Exness Personal Area. These may differ from your website login details.
1. Open the instrument’s chart from Market Watch.
2. Select Insert → Indicators, then choose a category and indicator.
3. Adjust the period, price input, levels, and appearance as needed.
4. Click OK to apply it.
You can also drag an indicator from Navigator → Indicators onto a chart. Start with default settings to learn how the tool behaves before changing multiple parameters.
How to install a custom MT5 indicator
1. Check the file and source
Use a trusted developer or the official MQL5 Market. MT5 custom indicators typically use .ex5 compiled files or .mq5 source files. MT4 files such as .ex4 and .mq4 do not run directly in MT5.
Custom programs can contain unsafe code. Avoid unknown installers, and do not enable DLL imports merely because a download page tells you to. Standard indicators generally do not need them.
2. Open the correct data folder
In the Exness-connected desktop terminal, select File → Open Data Folder. Open MQL5 → Indicators and copy the indicator file there. If the download is a ZIP archive, extract it first.
Using the terminal’s data-folder command helps avoid installing into the wrong directory when several MT5 terminals are on your computer. Follow the developer’s instructions for any supporting libraries or files.
3. Compile source files if necessary
An .ex5 file is already compiled. For an .mq5 file, open it in MetaEditor and select Compile to generate the executable. Compilation errors may indicate missing dependencies or incompatible code; ask the developer for a corrected MT5 version rather than guessing at fixes.
Indicators purchased through MQL5 Market should normally be installed through the terminal’s Market interface using the associated MQL5 account.
4. Refresh and attach
Return to MT5, right-click Indicators in Navigator, and select Refresh. Restart the terminal if necessary. Drag the indicator onto a chart, review its inputs, and click OK.
You do not normally need to enable Algo Trading just to display an indicator. Automated trade execution is a separate function, commonly handled by an Expert Advisor.
Troubleshooting: missing indicators or signals
- Not listed: confirm the file is in this terminal’s MQL5/Indicators folder and refresh Navigator.
- Won’t load: check the Experts and Journal tabs for dependency, licensing, or initialization errors.
- Blank display: load more chart history and check supported symbols, timeframes, and input settings.
- Different signals: broker price feeds, candle timing, and available history can affect calculations.
MT5’s mobile apps and standard web terminal do not support installing custom MQL5 indicators. Use desktop MT5 for custom tools; mobile users can choose from the app’s built-in indicators.
Exness versus Vantage for indicator users
Exness is a reasonable option to evaluate if you already use its MT5 environment: switching brokers is unnecessary simply to install a standard custom indicator. Compare the specific account’s spreads, commissions, swap terms, execution conditions, and local availability.
Our featured alternative, Vantage, offers MT4, MT5, and TradingView access, subject to entity, region, and account availability. It advertises raw spreads from 0.0 pips on eligible accounts; these are advertised minimums, not typical spreads or guaranteed trading costs. Commissions and other charges may apply.
Vantage has FCA- and ASIC-regulated entities, but not every customer contracts with those entities. Verify the legal entity and protections offered before applying. MT5 indicators also cannot simply be imported into TradingView, which uses Pine Script.
CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. Vantage is an advertising partner; we may earn a commission.
